General purpose of the position

The WASH Coordinator must ensure that the projects meet minimum standards, in a cost-effective and timely manner.

The WASH Coordinator assists the programme team in the management, strategic programming, implementation of WASH activities, and achievement of objectives related to the WASH component in the targeted geographic areas, as well as in the identification and formulation of new interventions to improve the WASH conditions of the target population aligned with WASH Working Group and INTERSOS protocols and the Country Strategy.

Main responsibilities and tasks:

  • Design and improve the technical implementation aspects of the INTERSOS WASH Program.
  • Support the Head of Mission on the development, implementation, and evaluation of the mission strategy and programme.
  • Define the mission’s WASH strategy in the country, ensuring program integration, resource allocation, and adherence to sector quality standards and guidelines.
  • Ensure the projects will satisfy the needs of the beneficiaries. Provides oversight of water source construction and sanitation projects to ensure quality and acceptance.
  • Organize, manage, and monitor the WASH project activities in targeted areas, ensuring timely and quality implementation in compliance with the defined project strategy as well as INTERSOS and donor guidelines.
  • Undertake a detailed technical assessment of the WASH needs and gaps for assistance in the project target areas to define the exact locations of intervention and the beneficiaries.
  • Coordinate with the logistic, administration, and finance staff to procure all equipment, supplies, and materials required to implement the WASH project activities, ensuring cost efficiency and accountability in compliance with INTERSOS and donor regulations and procedures.
  • Undertake regular field visits to provide technical guidance and supervision as well as regularly monitor the progress of the WASH project activities.
  • Continuously assess the WASH needs of the target populations in the project areas, regularly update the WASH situation analysis and inform the programme accordingly.
  • Work closely with colleagues to ensure the integration of the WASH project activities with other sectors.
  • Work closely with the HR department to build the capacities of the WASH project national staff in the Country and regularly evaluate their performance.
  • Support the management in preparing the narrative and financial reports with reference to the WASH project component, according to INTERSOS and donor requirements.
  • Coordinate the implementation of centralised WASH reporting systems, project standards, and indicators (both qualitative and financial) in order to ensure quality, terms and costs in collaboration with the other Coordinators. Regularly update project database and official website content, based on the information provided by Heads of Mission.
  • Coordinate with the MEAL department to ensure all forms and surveys follow the program indicators and objectives.
  • Upholds a high-quality standard by ensuring all programs refer to technical standards, conform to government standards, and are aligned with internal and external strategic objectives.
  • Support and develop capitalisation of WASH activities in the mission.
  • Proactively participate in WASH cluster and relevant inter-sectoral coordination meetings at national, governorate, and hub levels.

Required profile and experience

Education

  • MA or BSc in Engineering, hydrology, Geology, or other relevant studies
  • Specialized studies – courses on WASH in emergencies, Public Health, WASH Academic

Professional Experience

  • Minimum 3 years of experience in humanitarian WASH programming for MSc and 6 years of experience for BSc, including access to safe water, improved sanitation, and environmental health programming;
  • Prior work experience in complex humanitarian settings in the field;
  • Proven practical experience in WASH or construction project implementation, including experience in large-scale Water, Sanitation, and construction works construction and contract management;
  • Prior work experience in Africa is highly desirable.

Professional Requirements

General Conditions

According to the Country of assignment

Salary: The monthly remuneration for each position is defined according to the INTERSOS international standard salary grid and function grid, taking into account the selected candidate’s experience. It is communicated during the HR interview, or at any rate during the first stage of the selection process.

Transportation: Round-trip flights for the humanitarian worker and partner. For any mission lasting at least 12 months, after 9 months, an additional flight ticket to the Country of residence and return to the mission is covered by the Organisation for the humanitarian worker. In the Accompanied duty stations, also for the partner. In Family Duty Stations, also for dependents.

Medical insurance: Injuries and death insurance; civil liability insurance, reimbursement for vaccines, medical certificate and PCR test for deployment; psychosocial support on request for the humanitarian worker and dependents. In the Accompanied duty stations, also for the partner. In Family Duty Stations, also for dependents.

Visa: INTERSOS covers the costs and visa support for the humanitarian worker. and the partner. In the Accompanied duty stations, also for the partner. In Family Duty stations, also for dependents.

Annual leave: 2.5 days per month.

School fees: According to the Country of assignment

Induction: Online orientation course: each new staff member receives preparatory training before departure, adequate to provide the necessary information related to the structure of INTERSOS and the main decision-making processes and working tools, in order to facilitate entry into the Organisation.

Note 1: INTERSOS applies a “Learning & Development Policy” which includes the possibility to receive capacitation and participate in internal and external training. Priority will be given to Staff working for INTERSOS for over two years.

Note 2: The categorisation of Family, Non-Family, and Accompanied Duty stations is subject to security criteria, access to health and education services, and is non-negotiable.

Accommodation

Shared accommodation in a Guesthouse is provided in Field duty stations. In the Accompanied duty stations and Family duty stations, there is also the option of reimbursement of part of the accommodation cost and a flat allowance for installation expenses. In Family duty stations, there is also a contribution to school fees for dependent children.

R&R

INTERSOS staff required to work for extended periods at duty stations under hazardous, stressful and difficult conditions are granted a regular and mandatory period of Rest and Recuperation (R&R). This is due to protecting their health and well-being and ensuring optimal work performance upon the resumption of their duties, while, at the same time, preserving the operational readiness of the Organisation. R&R benefits are not financial compensation for the degree of hardship and insecurity of a duty station. Eligibility: staff members recruited as international field staff whose contract states one R&R Duty Station as the main Duty Station and whose contract duration is equal to or longer than 4 calendar months. R&R: it consists of 7 days of psycho-physical recovery every 8/12 weeks, depending on the duty station. A €1000 allowance is associated with it.
