Equal Rights Beyond Borders is a non-profit organization committed to strengthening the rights of asylum seekers at Europe’s external and internal borders. We focus on family reunification, the rights of unaccompanied minor refugees, and cases of illegal detention or return within Europe or to Turkey. We offer legal advice and legal representation for asylum seekers in EU Hotspots in Greece as well as on the Greek mainland and enforce their rights through strategic litigation in Germany and Greece. All offices work in close cooperation with partners in Greece, Germany and at EU level.

For our Office in Chios we are looking for a motivated intern to strengthen our team.

Responsibilities:

• Provide legal advice to clients on a walk-in basis;
• Conduct intakes with potential clients seeking representation in the asylum procedure;
• Conduct individual interview preparations, informing potential clients on the Greek asylum procedure and the EU-Turkey Deal;
• Draft legal statements in support of client’s refugee claims;
• Work independently on family reunification cases within the Dublin III framework;
• Maintain an own caseload under supervision of the legal coordinator;
• Work with and maintain a professional relationship with community centres.

Qualifications & Experience:

• Law degree or legal background;
• Sound knowledge of national, European and international asylum law;
• Excellent writing skills;
• Well-organized, self-motivated and reliable;
• High resilience and ability to cope with a high workload;
• Commitment to and sensitivity towards vulnerable or displaced people;
• Fluency in oral and written English. Knowledge of Greek, French, Arabic or Farsi is a plus;
• Previous experience in a similar position is a plus;
• Possibility of self-financing the assignment (e.g. legal clerkship, scholarship via Erasmus+ or DAAD, or own funds).
