Background

Based on the operational needs of UN agencies operating in the Syrian Arab Republic and considering the worldwide pandemic and its spiral effect throughout the whole country, the need to hire a UN physician in support of the UN clinic stationed in Damascus to support the medical technical capacity serving UN staff members throughout the country has prevailed.

The UN Physician will be reporting technically to the UN Clinic Chair, and administratively to UNDP Operations Manager.

Duties and Responsibilities

Summary of Key Functions:

  • Supports in Ensuring correct clinical duties;
  • Medico Administrative Duties;
  • Supports in the Administration of UN clinic in Damascus.

Supports in Ensuring correct clinical duties:

  • To undertake day-to-day clinical duties, e.g. walk-in clinic, emergencies;
  • To undertake day-to-day occupational health duties, pre placement and periodic medical examinations prepare UN staff for travelling providing immunizations, malaria prophylaxis, travel kits, etc.;
  • To follow-up with outside specialists;
  • To provide health education and health promotion programs;
  • To participate in addressing work environment and occupational health issues.

Ensures Medico Administrative Duties:

  • To liaise with UN-Military Medical Units in the mission and host-nation medical facilities;
  • To follow the United Nations established policies and procedures regarding medical clearances, sick leave and medical evacuations/repatriations;
  • To participate in drafting and implementation of business continuity and crises preparedness plans for the duty station/mission;
  • To deputize for a more senior Medical Officer during his/her absence.

Supports in the Administration of UN clinic in Damascus:

  • To manage day-to-day mission medical support operations by ensuring availability of medical supplies and proper functioning of medical equipment;
  • To ensure appropriate training programs are implemented in order to maintain and develop the medical;
  • capabilities (e.g. health education, HIV/AIDS prevention, first aid and CPR);
  • To provide Prompt response to any urgent and emergency call on 24 hr. basis;
  • To be immediately at the medical point upon request;
  • To provide health care and consultations for the UN staff and provide appropriate referrals cases to the identified hospital;
  • To follow-up patient transportation to the referral hospital when needed.

Impact of Results:

The key results have an impact on the overall health system of UN staff in Syria, and better ensuring the correct procedure of health follow up for UN colleagues.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Doctorate (MD) or equivalent in medicine, including residency/internship in one of the medical specialties, preferably internal medicine.

Experience:

  • A minimum of five years of progressively responsible clinical experience in one of the areas of medicine.

Language Requirements:

  • Fluency in English and Arabic (both oral and written).
