Traineeship in International Macroeconomics and International Finance

You will be part of the Directorate General International and European Relations, which has 120 staff members and prepares policy positions of the ECB/Eurosystem/European System of Central Banks on international as well as European issues, excluding positions on the macroeconomic policies of the euro area or EU countries. You will be assigned to a team in one of the following divisions of the Directorate General. The External Developments Division conducts economic analysis and forecasting of key economies outside the EU, such as the United States, Japan and China, and coordinates the international part of the ECB/Eurosystem staff projections exercise. The International Policy Analysis Division conducts economic analysis of issues of systemic relevance related to the global economy, the global monetary and financial system, and the international financial architecture, including matters related to global spillovers, international capital markets, commodities and exchange rates. As a trainee you will perform one or more of the following tasks:

  • support the work of one of the divisions, which may include assisting with data collection and analysis, generating tables and charts and preparing presentations;
  • maintain and further develop databases used to monitor global and country-specific monetary, financial and real sector developments, with a particular focus on enhancing use of data visualisation tools;
  • maintain and further develop quantitative tools and modelling infrastructure;
  • contribute to selected analytical projects through research assistance.

As a trainee you will work closely with highly qualified experts on different tasks and projects in the field of international macroeconomics and international finance, giving you valuable experience for your transition to a successful professional career. You will also be assigned a mentor, and will be able to develop your potential and quickly have a real impact on the work we do. Essential:

  • a bachelor’s degree or higher in economics, finance, statistics, data science or a related field;
  • a sound comprehension of international macroeconomics, monetary economics and international finance;
  • advanced knowledge of MS Office, in particular Excel, and intermediate knowledge of programming languages and econometric software (e.g. MATLAB, Stata, EViews, Python, R, SQL);
  • an advanced (C1) command of English and an intermediate (B1) command of at least one other official language of the EU, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, https://www.coe.int/en/web/common-european-framework-reference-languages/table-1-cefr-3.3-common-reference-levels-global-scale.

Desired:

  • a master’s degree in economics, finance, statistics, data science or a related field (or being close to completing a master’s degree);
  • a keen interest in policy-relevant and applied research and proven ability to conduct quantitative analyses;
  • experience with macroeconomic and financial market data service providers (e.g. Datastream, Bloomberg, Haver Analytics) and data visualisation software (e.g. Tableau);
  • sound knowledge of statistical and econometric techniques for data analysis;
  • hands-on experience handling multidimensional datasets.

You are curious and eager to learn, and want to further develop your ability to analyse complex information. You are keen to collaborate with others, pursue team goals and learn from other people’s diverse perspectives. You strive to know and anticipate stakeholder needs, and will signal any need for change and propose alternative solutions.
