Organizational Setting

The Conference, Council and Protocol Affairs Division (CPA) is responsible for providing liaison between the Organization and its Governing Bodies, as well as conference and protocol services. The Meeting Programming and Documentation Service (CPAM) is responsible for meeting scheduling and programming, and for the provision of interpretation, translation and terminology services. In particular, it ensures the provision of interpretation for FAO meetings in Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish, translation into the languages of the Organization and final typing of translated documents. It is responsible for meeting programming and forecasting, scheduling and monitoring documentation and publications for meetings, and coordinating requests for translation, provision of reference and terminology services and organization of non-FAO meetings.

Reporting Lines

The position is within the context of the terminology activities carried out by the Meeting Programming and Documentation Service, thus under the supervision of the Coordinator (Programming and Language Support) and the Terminology Officer of CPAM.

Technical Focus

The role of the Terminology Consultant is to assist translators and interpreters in their daily work and to provide and maintain the terminology resources of the Service.

Tasks and responsibilities

Under the overall supervision of the Coordinator (Programming and Language Support) and the Terminology Officer of CPAM and under the day-to-day guidance of the Terminology Officer but with a good degree of initiative and resourcefulness, the incumbent will:

  • Carry out the research of language equivalents in the most authoritative sources of each FAO domain in order to achieve and maintain language parity in the FAO Term Portal; the Terminology Consultant must exercise good judgement and perform an accurate research of equivalents, through the consultation of FAO documents, intranet and internet resources, terminological databases, glossaries, technical publications, in close collaboration with other CPAM colleagues.
  • Manage specific day-to-day terminology queries received from translators and colleagues by undertaking online research in CPAM internal corpora, UN-repositories, FAO Website and the internet.
  • Provide short courtesy translations, when required.
  • Proofread existing terminology entries.
  • Perform other duties as required.

CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING

Minimum Requirements

  • Advanced University degree in Linguistics or related field.
  • Three years of relevant experience in terminology, translation or related fields.
  • Working knowledge of English. Excellent command (mother tongue or equivalent) of Arabic, Chinese or Russian and limited knowledge of one of the other two or of French and Spanish.

  • Extent and relevance of experience in the linguistic services of international organizations or in a multilingual environment.

Selection Criteria

  • Candidates will be assessed against the requirements listed above.
  • Excellent writing, editing and oral communication skills.
  • Knowledge of an additional language would be considered an asset.
