    Duty station: Tashkent (remotely, until feasible to travel)

    Reports To: Project Manager 

     

    On January 30, 2020 the International Health Regulations Emergency Committee of the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the COVID-19 outbreak a “public health emergency of international concern”. The first confirmed case of the virus was detected in Uzbekistan on 15 March 2020. As of 2 June 2020, there were 3,750 confirmed COVID-19 cases, including 15 deaths and 2,908 recoveries. Already in January, the authorities moved quickly to ramp up health preparedness, and following confirmation of the outbreak, closed learning centers, canceled all public gatherings and introduced more restrictive distancing measures leading to the closure of public transportation, non-essential businesses, and public spaces. However, local transmission of the COVID-19 virus is yet to be contained. As the most populous country in Central Asia, the unfolding situation is likely to have a considerable socio-economic impact on the country, including disruptions in domestic production – reduced share in remittance inflows, sharp drop in tourist arrivals and a consequent drop in the service sector.

    UNDP will support Government efforts in line with the key areas of the COVID-19 UNDP’s Integrated Response- Health Systems Support; Inclusive and Integrated Crisis Management and Response; Addressing the human rights and socio-economic impact of COVID01Social and Economic Impact Needs Assessment and Response.

    The following key pillars were designed by UNDP to support for the Government efforts to mitigate the crisis:

    • Awareness raising campaign to prevent infecting and support on other pandemic-related issues;
    • Assessment and regular monitoring of social and economic situation throughout the country to identify the most affected groups of population;
    • Rapid community response and early recovery interventions, targeting most vulnerable groups.

     

    UNDP COVID-19 Rapid Response is implemented in an integrated manner through a cross-functional taskforce coordinating the activities through several projects, including Youth Employment, Women Empowerment, Accelerator Lab engagement. A core team was also set-up for COVID-19 implementation. The intern will be part of the COVID-19 core team.

     

    Internship Profile:

    By the end of the internship the intern is expected to have developed clear understanding of the reporting objectives and planned inputs, enhance educational experience, obtain practical skills and knowledge through practical assignments for further use in his/her research work, deepen knowledge and understanding of UNDP’s goals, principles and activities.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    Under the direct supervision of the Project Manager, the Intern will be expected to:


    • Set up a system for timely and qualitative collection of information on progress of COVID-19 response activities implemented by several UNDP projects
    • Summarize information and develop supporting graphics to produce summary reports;
    • Provide inputs into draft reporting submitted from projects;
    • Oversee the maintenance of combined COVID-19 intervention activities report on shared folders;
    • Systematize the reporting by developing simple database and reports on intervention activities’ status
    • Produce ad hoc ‘flash’ reports;
    • Respond to UNDP management requests for information.

    Required Skills and Experience

     

    Education:  in a relevant discipline (Economics, Business Administration/Management, Social Sciences, Statistics or a related fields)

    Applicants to the UNDP internship programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

    • be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or
    • be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); or
    • have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must start the internship within one-year of graduation

    Preferable Experience:

    • Experience in related work in reporting on program implementation and results is preferred.
    • Experience in writing reports on short deadlines is preferred.
    • Experience in the use of MS Word, PowerPoint, databases, the Internet and electronic media applications is preferred.

    Language requirements:

    • Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English, knowledge of Russian desirable

    Other:

    • Good computer literacy;

    Kindly note that selected intern will be required the following:

    • a Medical Certificate of Good Health from a recognized physician (can be obtained from a Family Center (State one), free of charge)
    • proof of medical insurance valid for the location(s) in which the internship will be carried out for duration of contract;

    Financial matters:
    The UNDP will provide a stipend to all interns. The stipend has been set at 45% of the UNDP Service Contract scale at the SC1/1 level at each duty station.

    UNDP only accepts interns for a minimum of 6 weeks and a maximum of 6 months.
    UNDP accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness or death incurred during the internship. Interns are not staff members and may not represent UNDP in any official capacity.

    Subsequent Employment:

    The purpose of the Internship Programme is not to lead to further employment with UNDP but to complement an intern’s studies. 

    Therefore, there should be no expectation of employment at the end of an internship.
