GENERAL CONTEXT
Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an international independent medical humanitarian action-driven organization, which offers assistance to populations in distress, to victims of natural or man-made disasters and to victims of armed conflict, without discrimination and irrespective of race, religion, creed or political affiliation. The MSF movement is built around six operational directorates supported by MSF’s 21 sections, 24 associations and other offices together worldwide.
MAIN PURPOSE
Lead clinical technical support for psychiatric care within MSF OCBA projects, ensuring quality standards in mental health interventions through training, supervision, and coaching of mhGAP clinicians and other medical staff, in order to strengthen MSF’s capacity to deliver comprehensive psychiatric care.
JOB OVERVIEW
The Psychiatrist provides remote and occasional on-site technical support to field teams, focusing on severe mental health conditions. Responsibilities include training, supervision, and development of tools to improve psychiatric care quality, aligned with MSF protocols and WHO mhGAP guidelines.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND MAIN TASKS
1. Training & Capacity Building
- Deliver training (remote and face-to-face) to mhGAP clinicians on psychiatric care following MSF protocols and WHO mhGAP guidelines.
- Develop practical tools and resources to improve psychiatric care quality in the field.
2. Supervision & Coaching
- Conduct regular supervision sessions with mhGAP clinicians, mainly remotely.
- Provide on-the-job coaching during field visits and assess quality of psychiatric care.
3. Clinical Support
- Offer technical support for complex/severe cases via telemedicine and occasional direct care.
- Co-manage patients with severe mental health conditions when necessary.
4. Quality Assurance & Monitoring
- Perform gap analysis during field visits and propose improvements.
- Review psychiatry databases monthly and provide feedback to projects.
5. Coordination & Communication
- Share regular technical updates and doubts with MH Advisor-Psychiatrist.
- Share regular updates with MH advisors and MH Regional Technicians, also with project stakeholders on progress, gaps, and solutions.
- Promote multidisciplinary teamwork and strengthen referral pathways within MHPSS teams.
6. Data & Knowledge Management
- Maintain an updated database of psychiatric consultations and cases.
- Support estimation and review for International Medical Orders (IMO).
SELECTION CRITERIA
- Medical Doctor specialized in Psychiatry.
- Previous MSF experience in psychiatry and mhGAP implementation is essential.
- Previous experience delivering mhGAP training and supervising GPs.
- Desirable Telemedicine experience.
- Psychotherapy training will be an asset.
- Proficiency in English and French both spoken and written is mandatory.
- Knowledge of Spanish, Portuguese or Arabic is an asset.
CONDITIONS
- Position based in any MSF-OCBA Hub: Amman, Bogotá, Dakar, Nairobi, Barcelona, Bilbao, Sevilla or Madrid. Final location will be subject to the employability of the preselected candidate (e.g., residency, work permit, etc.).
- Part-time position.
- Annual gross salary: HQ – 3B level + secondary benefits based on MSF OCBA Reward Policy. Subjected to local conditions.
- Contract duration: 9 months (until 31st December 2026).
- Starting date: 30th March 2026.
