About the company A non-profit company, providing free, comprehensive health services to communities nationwide is recruiting for a Legal Officer. Duties Include Perform annual risk assessment linked to various awards through contract reviews Develop a risk register based on reviews Communicate risks to relevant stakeholders and monitor resolutions Oversee administration of manual and electronic copies of all legal documents Ensure accuracy and completeness of contract registers Proactively communicate with relevant stakeholders prior to legal documents expiring Work with the grants team to ensure legal compliance and manage risks Advise on best practices and standards Assist with analysis, interpreting and applying federal, state, local Government, international funder and private funder statutes, rules, and regulations regarding grants administration Conduct detailed legal reviews of the organisations progress against contracted requirements and financial documents Stay up to date with funder rules and regulations Ensure compliance with statutory and legal requirements including Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) Implement a system to track, expedite, and fulfil legal support requests, which may range from urgent support on contracts, employment law questions, and registration of new entities Draft and review all forms of contracts including HR, operational, MOUs, and funder contracts Reporting Prepare and present reports as required Report on the results of internal legal investigations to the manager Provide recommendations to improve areas of deficiencies and process weaknesses identified Support management through participation in projects designed to introduce new and/or changing processes Build and maintain relationships with external stakeholders (funders, auditors, sub-awardees) Build and maintain relationships with internal stakeholders (unit manager, programme managers, audit and risk committee, staff, team members etc.) Provide legal advice to internal stakeholders
Relevant Bachelors degree in law and 1 – 2 years relevant experience at a minimum, or completed accredited paralegal course and 3 – 4 years relevant experience at a minimum NGO experience advantageous Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) knowledge beneficial Good understanding of statutory laws of South Africa Proficient in Word, PowerPoint and Excel (formulas, pivots, charts) Ability to compile detailed reports Excellent organisational skills and be able to multi-task Must be able to manage sensitive documents and function effectively in a fast-paced environment
