Their partnership with the School of Public Leadership at the University of Stellenbosch has built up the renowned Masters and PhD programmes in Sustainable Development, and in 2018 they proudly celebrated the launch of the Diploma in Sustainable Development undergraduate degree programme. The Institute is recognised as a leading expert institution in navigating the transition towards social justice and change in complex futures in Africa, and forms an institutional base for some of the top academics in the field. Their research and practice maintains a strong focus on sustainable African futures, through our student, faculty and consulting research. Their focus on transformative learning from birth and social innovation is embedded through our research, teaching and practice.
Sustainability Institute seeks to an IT Desktop Technician to be based in Stellenbosch, western Cape.
Reports to: Managing Director
The purpose of this position is to institute programmes, will be responsible for first tier IT support and providing clerical support where necessary. The IT Desktop Technician oversees a crucial portfolio of work for the entire organization that needs to be functioning effectively and efficiently, and as such requires a detail-oriented, problem-solving and proactive personality. This position will multitask a variety of responsibilities that include 1st tier IT support and front office, clerical activities. The objective of the role is to ensure that staff can operate smoothly through efficient IT support and that the organisation is able to deliver a professional service to all its partners as an educational facility. The IT Technician is responsible to diagnose, repair and maintain hardware and software components to ensure the smooth running of computer systems.
Responsibilities:
- Include installing and configuring computer hardware and being the primary point of contact for IT support within the organisation, the core areas of responsibility include:
- Network troubleshooting
- Clerical and general technical support to front of house admin team
- Since the IT Desktop Technician will be based on the SI premises certain non-core responsibilities are expected of him/her. Non-core areas of responsibility include:
- Keep SI surroundings free of litter
- Attend Monday morning staff meetings
- Attend the morning gatherings with students (when there are modules taking place)
- Participate in community work
- Driving in case of emergency
Required:
- A post-grade 12 qualification, ideally in Computer Science or related field
- 2 years of experience in computer network
- Proficient in database programming and software installation
- Proven IT knowledge and experience
- Valid Driver’s license
- Proficient in database programming and software installation
- Good knowledge of internet security and data privacy principles
- Familiarity with the computer languages and advanced operating systems
- Competent in using antivirus technologies and spyware technologies

- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Excellent organizational, coordinating and personal interface skills
- Proven job diligence, dedication and attention to detail
- Comfort and experience interfacing with various levels of staff and management, while working in a fast-paced environment
- Ability to think logically
- Ability to prioritise workload
- Ability to take initiative and ownership of own tasks, and manage systems to function smoothly
