Background:

UNICEF aims to ensure that every child is protected from violence, abuse and exploitation across development and humanitarian contexts. Ensuring that all children are protected is essential to ensuring children’s rights to survival, growth and development and is central to UNICEF work. UNICEF collaborates with diverse partners, invests in data and evidence, and builds child protection systems for prevention and response. Worldwide, 120 UNICEF country offices support national efforts to strengthen national child protection systems to prevent and respond to violence against children, strengthen access to justice for children, prevent family-child separation and strengthen alternative family-based care, strengthen the social service workforce for child protection and to address the rights and needs of children on the move. Documenting these efforts is critical for developing a better understanding of scope and reach of UNICEF efforts to strengthen child protection systems.

Purpose of the internship position:

Under the supervision of the Senior Advisor, SWJS and with guidance from other colleagues on the team, the intern will support specific tasks related to documentation review, reporting knowledge management and other assigned tasks as need, on programmes related to child protection systems strengthening (CPSS).

Specific Tasks:

  • Support a review and analysis of country office annual reports on the topics of birth registration/legal identity, acess to justice, alternative care, social service workforce strengthening, children on the move and child labor
  • Collect country reports and conduct initial keyword search
  • Synthesize information into a matrix agreed with the SWJS team
  • Analyze results to produce insights into country efforts to strengthen the child protection system in these areas
  • Work with CP Senior Advisor and report writer to draft materials for Thematic Report on Child Protection
  • Support development of a document depository for UNICEF SharePoint site (internal knowledge sharing platform):
  • Systematize a list of key resources on birth registration/legal identity, access to justice, alternative care, social service workforce strengthening, children on the move and child labor in collaboration with Child Protection Senior Advisor and other team members.
  • Develop short descriptions of key documents.
  • Other tasks assigned on as needed to be agreed with the intern.

Supervision and Assessment:

The intern and the supervisor will maintain regular contact and ensure weekly check in discussions/calls to discuss tasks progress and priorities.

Location: Home-based and/or office based as required and agreed with the intern.

Benefits to Intern:

  • The intern will have the opportunity and space to learn about child protection areas of work through hands on experience in analysing UNICEF results for 2019 and to contribute to the Child Protection Section’s advocacy, policy and reporting, primarily through the corporate reporting process (EDAR, PDAR, GARR). The experience of contributing to the development of the annual corporate reports is valuable as these are the main external reports that capture UNICEF work around the world, demonstrate UNICEF accountability to donors and partners; and are widely used for advocacy and partnership purposes from the country level to the global level.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Letter of verification from the college or university that the intern is currently enrolled in an undergraduate school and has completed at least two years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of an undergraduate degree (if the candidate is 18 years old, this replaces the two-year bachelor’s completion requirement); or, Graduate Degree Program (i.e., Master’s, PhD). It should also state the expected graduation date. Recent graduates are allowed until 2 years after degree completion.
  • Copy of their most recent official transcript showing excellent academic performance
  • Copy of Identification Card (ID)
  • One letter of signed recommendation on letterhead or from professional email address

Note: Individuals are responsible for arranging any visa or immigration requirements.

Qualifications:

  • The applicant must hold at least a Bachelor’s degree and be enrolled or have completed a Master’s degree within two years, preferably in public administration, economics, international relations, law or political science.
  • 1-3 years of experience in public health, social sciences, human rights/law, development studies, sociology, social work, or other social science.
  • Technical – strong analytical skills and ability to synthesize concepts and material into clear and concise thoughts.
  • Excellent knowledge of Microsoft office and Excel
  • Demonstrated strong communication, presentation and writing skills, including report writing, and development of technical documents is essential.
  • Relevant experience in child protection and/or related areas is an asset
  • Fluency in English (both written and verbal) is required.
