    This post is in the Office for Disarmament Affairs (ODA). The incumbent reports to the Director, Conference on Disarmament Secretariat and Conference Support Branch.

    The internship, based in Geneva, Switzerland, is UNPAID and full-time, working five days per week, under the supervision of a chief of unit in the department or office to which she/he is assigned.

    The initial duration of the internship is for 3 months and can be extended up to 6 months.

    Responsibilities

    Under the direct supervision of the Director and working closely with the team, the intern will be expected to:

    1) Plan, design, implement and manage ODA CDSCSB profile in the Unite Connections platform;
    2) Assist in record management in the Unite Docs platform;
    3) Prepare training materials and educate clients on related IT topics;
    4) Assist in other IT functions as necessary;
    5) Incorporate an integrated approach that includes a science and technology into the policy, planning and operational activities of the unit;
    6) Participates in in developing, managing and delivering project, project-design, and
    7) Perform other duties as required.

    Competencies

    If accepted, interns will be expected to embody the following competencies:

    – Creativity: Actively seeks to improve programmes or services; Offers new and different options to solve problems or meet client needs; Promotes and persuades others to consider new ideas; Is not bound by current thinking or traditional approaches.

    – Technological awareness: Keeps abreast of available technology; Understands applicability and limitations of technology to the work of the office; Shows willingness to learn new technology. Understands the importance of science and technology in a disarmament context.

    Education

    To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, applicants must meet one of the following conditions:

    (a) Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or

    (b) Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); or

    (c) Have graduated with a university degree (Bachelor’s, Master’s, Ph.D. or equivalent) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation;

    (d) If pursuing their studies in countries where higher education is not divided into undergraduate and graduate stages, they must have completed at least four years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of a degree;

    (e) Having graduated from or studying in the programme of information systems and communication technology, public information, communication, languages, social sciences or a related field is desirable;

    (f) Be computer literate in standard software applications, in particular related to social media; proficiency in HTML, CSS and/or Drupal is desirable;

    (g) Have a demonstrated interest in the work of the United Nations and a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and

    (h) Have a demonstrated ability to interact successfully with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes a willingness to be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

    Work Experience

    Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.

    Languages

    English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, fluency in spoken and written English is required. Knowledge of French is an asset. Knowledge of another official UN language is desirable.
