Organizational Setting
This position is located in FAO Representation to Pakistan, based in Islamabad. The main aim of the FAO country offices, which are headed by an FAO Representative, is to assist governments to develop policies, programmes and projects to achieve food security and to reduce hunger and malnutrition, to help develop the agricultural, fisheries and forestry sectors and to use their environmental and natural resources in a sustainable manner.
Reporting Lines
Under the overall supervision of the FAO Representative in Pakistan and in close coordination with Assistant FAOR-Programme in Pakistan, GIS Officer will directly supervise the developer.
Technical Focus
- Develop interactive maps and dashboards, customize existing information systems to meet the data requirements.
- Understands the projects’ requirements and develop GIS application to meet needs.
- Maintain and support application according to changing requirements.
Tasks and responsibilities
- Provide assistance to design the system of databases for collected data and mapping the data in the form of atlas.
- Provide technical assistance as GIS Developer (software developer) to help design and develop GIS programming applications and tools.
- Support to design and develop web mapping applications and geo-processing tools.
- Assist in data integrity and quality assurance activities to ensure application stability.
- Stay current with latest developments in GIS field.
- Recommend new technologies and techniques for application development.
- Ensure that application architecture meets the requirements.
- Design, code and integrate application with database management systems.
- Test applications and perform bug fixes.
- Develop system problem reports and recommendations.
- Work effectively in a team to develop high quality GIS solutions.
CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING
Minimum Requirements
- BS (or higher) in Computer Science, GIS, Engineering, or related field
- Minimum 3 years of experience with geospatial data management and analysis technologies: Python, Jupyter notebooks, web development, databases, cloud computing
- Working experience with UN and/or international organizations will be an asset.

- Experience with web development technologies, relational & non-relational databases in Unix/Linux environments

- Understanding of the purpose and functions of technical programmes, operational guidelines and programme/project management procedures, preferably those adopted by the United Nations or FAO would be considered an added asset.
- Demonstrated experience developing customer-focused software for analysis
- Experience developing geospatial software applications for remote sensing/GIS analysis
- Experience using Python and other programming languages
- Demonstrated competency in the use of software engineering principles
- Experience performing data science
- Knowledge of remote sensing concepts. Can work with and understand a wide range of geospatial data formats. Experience with optical/radar remote sensing datasets.
- Good Working knowledge of English required.
- Experience developing geospatial software applications for remote sensing/GIS analysis
