Setting and ReportingThis position is located in the Marketing and Dissemination Unit of the Documents and Publications Division of the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC). The incumbent reports to the Supervisor of the Unit. The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean is one of the five regional Commissions of the United Nations. It was founded in 1948 with the purpose of contributing to the region’s economic and social development. Its mission includes the design, monitoring and evaluation of public policies and the provision of advisory services, expertise and training to Governments, as well as support for regional and international cooperation and coordination activities. ResponsibilitiesWithin limits of delegated authority, the Desktop Publishing Assistant will be responsible for the following duties: • Provides specialized assistance to officers in the production and delivery of information communications products and services. • Assists with visualizations and updating information material such as web pages, brochures or social media accounts. • Uploads publications to the digital repository and to the ECLAC publications website, ensuring correct metadata and visualizations. • Assists and replaces more senior Desktop Publishing Assistant, when needed. • Identifies and retrieves documents from the United Nations Official Documents System (ODS) and researches and verifies terminology on the Intranet. • Performs daily maintenance of network drives. • Rotates in shifts, as well as weekend on-call duties, as needed. • Depending on the needs of the service, availability for overtime is expected. • Assists with the collection and analysis of data as well as preparation of data presentations and reports for information sharing, responding to queries, knowledge management, planning and decision making. • Assists with visualizations and updating information material such as web pages or brochures. • Performs other related work as required. Competencies• PROFESSIONALISM: Knowledge of UN structure and rules of procedure of various organs. Knowledge of all aspects of the work of the unit, including digital publishing technologies, web technologies and editorial marketing via social media. Proficiency in desktop publishing, including typographic standards. Demonstrates use of initiative, ability and creativity to effectively attain objectives. The ability to perform analysis, modeling and interpretation of data in support of decision-making. EducationHigh school diploma or equivalent is required. NOTE: For positions in the General Service category, candidates are required to clearly indicate in their Applicant Profile (AP) relevant information confirming completion of High School. Job – Specific QualificationSupplemental technical or university courses in marketing or related area are required. Work ExperienceAt least five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in digital publishing technologies, including draft typing, copy editing, proof-reading and typographical layout or related area is required. The minimum years of relevant experience is reduced to three (3) for candidates who possess a first-level university degree or higher. Professional experience in international organizations, including the United Nations system, is desirable. Experience providing support with the production of digital content for distribution through social media and other digital outlets is desirable. Experience managing content in an institutional website is desirable. One (1) year or more of experience in data analytics or related area is desirable. LanguagesEnglish and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this job opening, English and Spanish are required.
