    We are looking, on behalf of our client, for a Business Development (BD) Director, position based in USA. The organization’s upcoming pipeline includes work in organizational development, democracy and governance, economic growth and trade, and water and sanitation, agriculture, environment and natural resources to name a few. The BD Director will lead the organization’s BD team; providing direction and analysis to best position the region’s efforts to meet new business growth targets; developing and disseminating best practices; exercising sound judgment and problem-solving skills to ensure overall quality of the organization’s proposals; and fostering professional development and building capacity of staff. We are looking for individuals who have a passion for making a difference in the lives of people around the world.

    Qualifications include

    • Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree preferred
    • Minimum 8 years of relevant experience in the USAID support services sector
    • Ability to conceptualize, outline, perform, and direct the research and writing of technical and cost proposals
    • Understanding of project and financial management systems and procedures
    • Ability to lead effective meetings and demonstrated presentation skills
    • Ability to solve complex technical, managerial, or operational problems and evaluate options based on relevant information, resources, well-rounded experience, and knowledge
    • Ability to operate at advanced levels of authority and control significant activities, budgets, and resources to produce and take responsibility for results
    • Demonstrated leadership, management, organizational, and decision-making skills
    • Demonstrated ability to resource, manage, and supervise staff assigned to project teams and/or new business efforts
    • Ability to travel and work globally
    • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team

    Management

    • Develops effective working relationships with clients, counterparts and stakeholders and continually promotes outstanding client service with home office staff and field teams.
    • Proactively tracks upcoming solicitations and informs relevant in-house parties of bids in sufficient time to make informed “go and no go” decisions.
    • Oversees and/or leads proposal teams including developing guidelines consistent with corporate policies and best practices.
    • Supervises, develops, and evaluates assigned team(s) and supervises managers, associates, and sometimes other directors. Ensures staff receives regular constructive performance feedback, prompt resolution of problems, and time and opportunity to grow and develop in key competency areas.
    • Develops and supervises implementation of proposal strategies to optimize profitability and win rate.
    • Serves as salary negotiator or leads negotiation team for candidates proposed on bids and for home office new business positions.
    • Serve as Czar on proposal efforts ensuring that sound management principles and quality controls are employed during proposal preparation and submission.

    Technical

    • Applies in-depth technical expertise to new business efforts, and the organization’s knowledge base. Conceptualizes and leads or supervises proposal, G-trips, and other relevant technical assignments.
    • Advances body of knowledge and quality standards in primary discipline and practice networks. Formulates interdisciplinary approaches to guide new business efforts and technical assignments and advises others on technical trends and programming priorities.
    • Takes leadership role in work of the practices and professional societies, represents company at technical conferences, and prepares or improves technical and development practitioner publications.
    • Participates in activities to build a strong knowledge culture by sharing best practices and important innovations through practice networks and knowledge management systems.

    New Business Development

    • Analyzes development funding trends and priorities. Formulates strategies, new directions, and techniques to grow the company and improve market share, and networks with clients, consultants, and counterparts regarding new business opportunities.
    • Undertakes leadership role in proposal development, analyzing and recommending bid decisions, and conceptualizing teaming, technical approaches, and cost strategies to maximize competitive advantage.
    • Assumes role of proposal czar or technical writer, providing vision and leadership to proposal teams, and mentoring and supervising the application of best practices.
    • Serves as lead new business leader to track, implement, and perform regional new business efforts, including organizing and leading new business teams, strategy sessions, training, and teaming arrangements.

    Management and Leadership

    • Leads documentation and open sharing of best practices and important innovations company wide. Delivers effective oral and written presentations that advance development assistance knowledge and understanding and communicates in a way that persuades and promotes openness and innovation.
    • Recommends and/or leads strategic staff recruitment. Supervises, mentors, and evaluates manager and associate-level staff, communicating clear performance goals and standards, offering regular performance feedback, ensuring effectively run meetings, and maintaining an open-door policy.
    • Coaches managers to develop effective supervision skills.
    • Promotes staff development through coaching, mentoring, and facilitating professional growth opportunities. Promotes and exemplifies the organization’s values and ethical standards and manages staff to achieve team and development objectives.
    • Creates a productive and motivating work environment for staff by promoting cooperation and teamwork across departments, staying abreast of management, leadership, and team building strategies and advocating for them within the organization.
    • Demonstrates leadership, versatility and integrity.
