As part of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF), the Institute for Disease Modeling’s (IDM) mission is to guide global efforts towards the eradication and control of infectious disease through the use and promotion of quantitative analysis. The IDM team is composed of research scientists and engineering support teams who inform global disease eradication policy by applying the power of computational modeling. IDM is seeking a Software Test Engineer or a Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET) to bring their passion for software quality to bear on the challenges of infectious disease eradication. This position will work closely with scientists and software developers to manually test new features and develop automated tests of IDM’s disease modeling pipeline.  This pipeline already includes a climate and demographics database system, compute cluster management software, and data science software for visualization of simulation output. This individual will help support scientific research teams’ adoption of software development practices and ensure that IDM’s scientists can focus on the scientific challenges of disease modeling with a high level of confidence in the quality of their underlying software. This will require automation of statistical tests, collaboration with scientific professionals, and manual exploratory testing.

This position reports to the Software Test Manager – IDM and is located in Seattle.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Design, implement, and execute automated tests of IDM software.
  • Perform integration tests of new software tools integrated into IDM’s technical stack.
  • Learn the statistical and scientific concepts necessary for evaluating scientific software.
  • Share quality assurance roles with software developers, scientists, and others.
  • Interrogate software requirements to create clear, meaningful test plans.
  • Document and execute manual test cases.
  • Secure all documentation and automation source code under source code control.
  • Track and communicate test status to other members of project teams.
  • Continually deepen and broaden understanding of software testing methodologies.
  • Assess and communicate risk to development and research partners
  • Perform other tasks necessary for fulfilling IDM’s mission.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • 5+ years of experience as a Software Test Engineer or Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET):
    • End-to-end testing of web services and applications
    • Development of automated test reporting (NUnit, JUnit, MS Test, other)
    • Generation, tracking, and regression of defect reports (bugs)
    • Tracking of progress in a test case management system
    • Creation of classes and tests in Python
  • Building and debugging of compiled software in Eclipse, Microsoft Visual Studio, or equivalent
  • Take test ownership of complex projects quickly
  • Demonstrable comfort with multiple technology stacks, including
    • IDEs (Netbeans, RStudio, PyCharm, RubyMine, etc.)
    • Command line environments (CMD, Bash, etc.)
    • Database solutions (Microsoft SQL Server, PostgreSQL, mysql, sqlite)
    • Operating systems (Windows, Linux)
  • Prefer candidates with experience with
    • Continuous integration (Bamboo, Jenkins, GitHub actions)
    • Cloud Computing (Microsoft Azure, Google Compute, AWS)
    • Containerization (Docker, Singularity)
    • Academic or scientific software development
