Group Summary

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s Family Planning (FP) team is working to bring access to high-quality contraceptive information, services, and supplies to women and girls in the world’s poorest countries. Family Planning is part of the FP, Maternal, Newborn, Child Health (MNCH), Nutrition Cluster – three interrelated teams focused on the health of women, mothers, newborns, and children. Our work spans the spectrum from upstream research (collaborating with multiple teams in the Global Health Division) to implementation research, to supporting scale (collaborating with Country Offices, Global Delivery Programs, and Program Advocacy and Communications).

Role summary

We have an opening for a Family Planning Senior Strategy Officer position. This role will lead high-priority strategy projects, including supporting the Director to lead an in-process strategy refresh – defining and revising the team’s strategy. The person will also lead critical problem solving during the first year of executing against the new strategy – identifying and answering strategic questions; and collaborating with the Family Planning leadership team to support and refine the team’s strategic vision at all levels. The person will design and lead qualitative and quantitative analyses, identify and elevate key insights, and use those insights to guide our strategy and investment-making. The Senior Strategy Officer will work closely with programmatic staff and the Family Planning Director to identify, articulate, and lead discrete strategy projects for Family Planning – maximizing the deep programmatic expertise in the team. The role will lead development of materials for regular strategy reviews; for high-level learning sessions; and for other informal communications with foundation leadership.

The FP Senior Strategy Officer will report to the cluster Deputy Director for Strategy, Planning, and Management.

Core responsibilities

Lead strategic thinking and problem solving for the Family Planning team, working closely with the Senior Officer, Strategy, Planning and Management. This includes (but is not limited to):

  • Partnering with the Family Planning Director and Cluster leadership team to scope, lead, and execute strategy development – engaging deeply in content and analyses.
  • Supporting execution of a new Family Planning strategy – partnering with programmatic staff and the Family Planning leadership team to support the development of discrete, time-bound, strategic bodies of work.
  • Contributing and participating in ongoing iterative improvement of the Family Planning strategy – refining our approach as we learn from early execution; and responding to changes in the internal and external environment.
  • Identifying, leading, and supporting qualitative and quantitative analyses to support strategic decision making
  • Leading a collaborative process to develop materials for annual planning, strategy reviews, learning sessions, and other informal communications with foundation leadership – partnering with the Director and Family Planning Leadership team to gather content and expertise, leading synthesis and development of recommendations, and setting the bar for quality and rigor in slides, memos, and other communications.
  • Identifying and leading other discrete strategy projects, including those that cut across the Family Planning, MNCH, and Nutrition cluster.

  • Ability to learn new content quickly, identify connections and second-order implications and demonstrate proficiency with internal / external teams. Strong pattern recognition grounded in relevant knowledge
  • Experience working in low- and middle- income countries
  • Knowledge and/or experience in family planning, sexual and reproductive health, and/or other related fields
  • Demonstrated strength in structured problem solving and strategic business planning, with the ability to easily identify and communicate frameworks to facilitate strategy creation and analyze core issues.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to rapidly build trusted advisor relationships with senior leaders.
  • Ability to manage a high level of ambiguity within and across strategy projects
  • Deep knowledge of strategy development and end-to-end sophisticated project management (including process design, team structure, critical thinking requirements, development of novel communication resources and external/senior partner engagement).
  • Ability to work in a self-guided manner, prioritize and work towards demanding timelines.
  • Ability to question and challenge colleagues including managers and partners in constructive manner.
  • Accustomed to highly unstructured and ambiguous situations.
  • Excellent organizational, facilitation, oral, and written communication skills. Ability to work effectively and with sensitivity across barriers such as language, culture and distance. Excellent listening skills and compassion.
  • Excellent software skills with Microsoft Office applications, including a demonstrated ability to convey complex information using supporting tables, graphs and other visual representations.
  • Ability to travel up to 20% domestically and internationally

Education and Experience

We seek an experienced professional with at least 7+ years of progressive experience, preferably with experience leading projects at a premier strategy consulting firm

  • MBA, MPH, or other advanced degree in a relevant field preferred but not required
  • Must be able to legally work in the country where this position is located without visa sponsorship.
