EUROPEAN SPACE AGENCY Young Graduate Traineeship Opportunity in the Directorate of Operations.

ESA is an equal opportunity employer, committed to achieving diversity within the workforce and creating an inclusive working environment. Applications from women are encouraged.

Post Young Graduate Trainee for Near-Earth Asteroid Research This post is classified F1.

Location ESOC, Darmstadt, Germany

Our team and mission

Near-Earth objects (NEOs) are small bodies in the Solar System which come close to Earth. Some may actually enter the atmosphere. If large enough, they can cause considerable damage. In February 2013 a roughly 20-m sized object broke up in the atmosphere above the Russian city of Chelyabinsk. The shock wave shattered windows and injured about 1500 people. A 500-kg fragment fell into a nearby lake – had it hit the city, it could have destroyed buildings. Our task is to discover these objects, monitor them, predict their orbits and generate warnings in case they come close to Earth.

Candidates interested are encouraged to visit the ESA website: http://www.esa.int as well as http://www.esa.int/Our_Activities/Space_Safety/Risky_asteroids and http://neo.ssa.esa.int.
