Our team and mission

The ESA Independent Safety Office is responsible for overseeing the development, implementation, and maintenance of ESA policies, requirements and standards for:

  • Space Debris Mitigation,
  • Re-entry Safety,
  • Nuclear Safety,
  • Planetary Protection
  • Human Spaceflight Safety

The Office is part of the Product Assurance & Safety Department.

Field(s) of activity

Under the supervision of your assigned tutor within the Office, you will as YGT:

  • familiarise yourself with recently-updated safety requirements and the safety certification process applicable to the International Space Station, the Lunar Gateway habitation modules and more generally human spaceflight exploration including crewed vehicles.
  • participate in ESA safety review activities for certification of system and payload hardware developed by European industry.
  • review already-certified system and payload hardware for lessons-learned compilation.
  • participate in the definition of new safety requirements, their implementation and the verification approach.
  • compile safety guidelines for the transportation and operations of simple payloads/experiments on-board the ISS.

You should have just completed, or be in the final year of a university course at Master’s level (or equivalent) in a technical or scientific discipline.

Additional requirements

Aerospace/Space engineering background is desired and some knowledge of the safety domain is an asset.

The working languages of the Agency are English and French. A good knowledge of one of these is required. Knowledge of another Member State language would be an asset.

You should demonstrate good interpersonal skills and the capacity to work both independently and as part of a team.

During the interview your motivation and overall professional perspective/career goals will also be explored.
