    Dates: Flexible

    Duration: 5-12 weeks

    Focus: Refugees

Street Child is looking for individuals hoping to gain valuable experience in the development sector by undertaking an international volunteering role in Uganda. Having very recently launched in Uganda, Street Child is seeking volunteers to support our local partners’ existing projects, as well as help explore the scope for further expansion and development. In Uganda the focus of Street Child and our partner organisations is on supporting the education and protection of children in refugee communities.

Working alongside the Street Child of Uganda team and our local partners, key responsibilities may include but are not limited to:

    • Overseeing the research and implementation of projects; including travel to the field sites where necessary

    • Coordinating primary and secondary research at field sites using bespoke methodologies and methods, including appropriate tools for research with children, their communities and other relevant stakeholders

    • Monitoring and evaluating the progress of projects to ensure they are on target to reach the outlined timeframes and intended impact

    • Liaising and working in collaboration with local partners and stakeholders

    • Identifying potential local and international funders and writing in depth funding proposals to these organisations as required

    • Creating research papers based on data collected from the field which provide recommendations for Street Child and relevant stakeholders; these papers will form the basis for future research and initiatives

    • Conducting literature reviews on assigned issues and proposing frameworks for how the issues can be addressed within the Street Child framework

A fundraising commitment is also required of successful applicants, for which support will be provided by Street Child UK. For those who reach their targets, there is the opportunity to have the costs of your flights covered. Participants will also be invited to a training day in February 2019, with a senior member of our Programmes Team & the Head of Fundraising at Street Child’s Head Office in London.

    • A strong academic record

    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

    • Extremely independent and capable of proactive work plan management with minimal support and guidance

    • Flexible, adaptable and able to thrive in a startup environment

    • Thoughtful, resourceful, reflective, and eager to learn

    • Culturally responsive and respectful

    • Professional and diligent in presentation and conduct

    • Keen interest in understanding and contributing to the development sector

The successful applicant must be prepared to live and work in very basic conditions with limited access to electricity, running water and wifi.

Every intern has to cover their own costs for flights, vaccinations and visa. Once in country there is a fixed daily cost covering accommodation and any work-related travel, ranging between 8€ and 11€, depending on the respective project. A more detailed breakdown of costs and expenses will be provided for those applicants selected for an interview.

We ask all our international interns to fundraise 1200€.

Fundraising is an important part of working in the international developmental sector. We see it as an important experience and part of the internship that a Street Child International Intern gets to see and experience this side of daily work in an NGO.

Our projects are only possible because of the money we fundraise. Asking for a fundraising commitment has proven to be a great way to both make sure that an intern’s time in country leaves a lasting impact and grows awareness of the problems Street Child is working hard to address. Every successful applicant will work together with one of our experienced fundraising mentors, who will provide all the information and material necessary to reach the fundraising goal as well as accompany and support the intern throughout every step in the fundraising process, while giving valuable insights!
