The Financial Sector Assessments and Policies Division (FS) in IMF’s Monetary and Capital Markets Department (MCM) has an opening for a Research Officer.

FS plays four main roles: (1) managing and reviewing the Financial Sector Assessment Program (FSAP), including its financial stability risk assessment; (2) developing FSAP policies and instruments, including integrating the FSAP with other financial surveillance; (3) developing, applying, and evaluating analytical tools for financial stability assessment, including stress testing and macrofinancial analysis; and (4) disseminating the analytical tools to internal and external audiences though technical assistance, technical cooperation, and teaching. The division’s staff includes fungible macroeconomists with strong analytical skills and stress testing experts.


In addition to the responsibilities described in the job standards, the Research Officer will:

  • Participate in the division’s technical, analytical, and operational projects;
  • Provide analytical support to FS staff in FSAPs and other projects led by FS;
  • Develop and use computer programs for data management and statistical purposes, including for econometric analysis;
  • Provide in-house advice on data sources and software and programming to the division;
  • Maintain and develop FS’s online system for tracking the assessments under the FSAP;
  • Help in FS’s regular planning exercises for the FSAP, in coordination with relevant counterparts in the World Bank’s FSAP office;
  • Provide advice on data management practices to FSAP teams;
  • Liaise with Research Officers in MCM and outside the department as well as Information Technology Department (ITD) staff on information technology, problem-solving and database creation, and access to internal and external databases;
  • Provide data and economic analysis used for the preparation of articles, research papers, speeches and Board documents; and
  • Participate in other projects and tasks as required.


The successful candidate will meet the following requirements:

  • Knowledge of and experience with financial sector databases, such as Bankscope, Worldscope, Bloomberg, Reuters, DataStream, EMDB, Moody’s, Thomson Global Banking Resource, The Bankers’ Almanac, Capital Intelligence, OECD and BIS databases;
  • Knowledge of and experience with Fund economic data management software;
  • Excellent data management and analysis skills;
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Access, and other Windows software and relevant Fund applications/templates;
  • A thorough understanding of econometric software, especially STATA, and preferably also MATLAB and R;
  • Experience in web design and content management;
  • Initiative and ability to find creative solutions;
  • Ability to perform assignments accurately and reliably under time pressure;
  • Ability to multi-task and work under tight deadlines;
  • Ability to work independently and in collaboration with others, interacting effectively with colleagues within the Fund and with country authorities;
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills, with proficiency in English; and
  • Completion of an advanced university degree in economics, finance, statistics, or computer science is required.
