The Youth Leadership Programme (YLP) focuses on helping young people address sustainable development challenges, provide them with a series of interactive handsâ€on learning workshops, ongoing support and targeted mentoring. By equipping youth with new tools, YLP allows both its participants and UNDP staff to identify new entry points for change and develop various approaches in social innovation and project methodologies highlighting the importance of human-centered design.

The Project Assistant will be part of the Youth Development Delegates Programme in the Arab region, an initiative that is in partnership with the Arab Youth Center. The objective of this assignment is to support youth programming and the implementation of the Youth Leadership Programme at the country level as well as the regional level. The Project Assistant will work under the supervision and guidance of the UNDP Regional Youth Focal Point. S/he will be an integral part of the UNDP Regional hub and Regional Programme team and will play an important role supporting UNDP’s Country Offices and partners, with a strong focus on coordination, advocacy, planning, and evaluation.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of the Regional Youth Focal Point, Project Assistant will particularly be responsible for the following tasks:

  • Directly supports the YLP, where relevant and/or youth programming by following up on implementation, coordinating with partners, UNDP Country Offices and the Youth Delegates, accessing regional networks, creating linkages and providing technical support.
  • Supports the induction and conclusion events for the Youth Delegates in coordination with all delegates and the Arab Youth Center, a partner for the Arab Youth Delegates Initiative.
  • Contributes to strategic planning, developing innovative responses to emerging challenges and opportunities for youth in the Arab region around SDGs.
  • Supports the timely preparation and quality control of all substantive technical reports, briefs and required documents, including progress reports, concept notes, background documents and briefing notes.
  • Works closely with the regional team members in the development of project activities to promote youth’s social, political and economic empowerment in the Arab region. S/he will collect information on activities and corresponding results in order to document good practices and define synergies among UN/DP programmes and projects
  • Facilitates the delivery of YLP activities by monitoring results achieved during implementation. S/he ensures and guides the appropriate application of monitoring, reporting and evaluation systems and procedures and develops enhancements if necessary.
  • Captures stories which reflect on know how (procedures, processes, tactics) and know why (lessons learned, reasons for failures/success).
  • Coordinates the youth’s leadership programme’s mentorship support, where relevant.
  • Conducts an overview and analysis of the relevant partners, donors and stakeholders to the project, and develops a plan for efficient flow of information between them and the project, and vice versa.
  • Supports the generation, management and dissemination of knowledge related to UNDP activities on youth empowerment and inclusion through developing general tools/guidelines for operative communication measures at regional/national/local levels, for instance press releases, social media, press events, social media and campaigns.
  • Expected to coordinate the submission of quarterly progress report from all the youth delegates and end of the year report to the Regional Youth Focal Point and corresponding partner.
  • Carrying out other tasks as assigned in coordination with respective supervisor, and any other required administrative work.


  • Highly motivated, pleasant character with good team work spirit;
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Available for long working hours during times of peak work.
  • Proficiency of Arabic language is a must
  • Good computer skills in both English and Arabic
  • Strong writing skills in both English and Arabic
  • Demonstrated experience in coordination
  • Ability to accommodate and adapt to changing working environment.
  • Systematic and organized, with an ability to be flexible and adaptive.
  • Ability to perform a variety of standard tasks related to screening and collecting of project documentation, projects data entering, preparation of revisions, filing, provision of information, and reporting.

Required Skills and Experience

Education: College Diploma in International Affairs, Development Studies or related fields.

Experience: At least 4-5 years of relevant work experience.

Language Requirements: Written and oral English and Arabic, French is an asset.

Skills: Advanced computer skills, including word processing (Word), spreadsheet (Excel) and data management programmes, and ability to quickly learn new applications.

Additional requirements:

Experience in youth leadership or empowerment initiatives at national and/or sub-national level

Experience in coordination work is an asset

Experience on the 2030 Agenda and SDGs is an asset

Knowledge of UNDP work, design thinking and innovation is an asset
