Background:
The Euro-Mediterranean Foundation of Support to Human Rights Defenders (EMHRF) is a Danish-based regional foundation established in 2004 that aims at supporting and reinforcing the capacities of local human rights defenders and organisations in the South-Mediterranean region through the provision of rapid and strategic financial assistance (http://emhrf.org/). In particular, it provides support to human rights NGOs or members of associations under pressure or attack; innovative and sensitive projects within the regional context; and to NGOs whose activities fall outside mainstream donors’ priorities. Its headquarters are located in Denmark and it has regional offices in France and in Tunisia.
Job Summary:
Under the supervision of the Programme Director, the Regional Assistant will provide support to the Maghreb and Mashreq Programme teams in their daily work to protect and support local human rights defenders and organisations, notably those facing imminent risks and vulnerabilities.
Essential Job Functions:
- Ensure receipt, evaluation and a coordinated answer to all grant applications received, including by filling in and updating an application database on a daily basis;
- Provide regular updates regarding research and tools produced, developments and needs of human rights defenders from the region to the programme team and to local partners;
- Conduct thorough due diligence reviews on applications received, and contribute to drafting urgent consultations and executive summaries to facilitate the Board’s decision-making on applications;
- Assess and evaluate midterm and final narrative and financial reports, including supporting documents, received from local partners;
- Assist in the management of contracts and reporting obligations with local partners;
- Assist with short translations and research, upon request;
- Contribute to editing and updating the Foundation’s website;
- Contribute to other ad hoc activities to assist the general work of the EMHRF.
Skills, Education and Experience:
- Master’s degree in international law, Middle Eastern Studies, Political Science or other relevant fields.
- At least 2 years of experience working with civil society actors.
- Experience in monitoring and evaluation criteria and tools is highly recommended.
- Excellent writing and oral communication skills in English and Arabic (mother tongue or similar) are mandatory (French is an additional advantage).
- Sensitivity and appreciation for diverse viewpoints and different communication styles in a politically and culturally diverse environment.
- Ability to meet deadlines, to set priorities, to coordinate work and manage complex tasks.
- Excellent organisational skills and high attention to detail and accuracy.
- Computer literacy.
Terms and Conditions:
Location : 93100 Montreuil (metro L9 Croix de Chavaux).
Working hours and duration: 35 hours per week. Full-time unlimited term contract (CDI).
Salary: 29-33K Euros (annual gross salary) based on EMHRF salary scale and taking into consideration experience. Meal vouchers of EUR 9 (50% covered by EMHRF), supplementary health insurance (60% covered by EMHRF), 50% public transportation covered by EMHRF.
Start of assignment: As soon as possible, and preferably by February-March 2020.
