    The Division of Communication (DOC) aims to win support for the cause of children from decision-makers and the wider public, and is working to become an even stronger advocacy, campaigning and communications force for children.

    The Digital Strategy Section (DSS) in DOC comprises Web Editorial, Social Media News and Campaigns, and Digital Governance and Platforms teams working together to create compelling public-facing content and to provide digital services within the organization. Through multiple platforms and in multiple languages, DSS works to shape and amplify UNICEF’s powerful and compelling global digital voice and reach, in order to drive advocacy and engagement around the issues that matter most for the world’s children and young people.

    How can you make a difference?

    DSS seeks to hire a highly qualified versatile Digital Web Editor to engage existing audiences and reach new ones through its global website.

    Under the general guidance of the Head of Web Editorial, the staff member is responsible for writing, editing and curating major ‘evergreen’ sections of (including programmatic and other key organizational content), as well as leading web content development and integration for UNICEF global campaigns. The incumbent is also responsible writing, editing, and producing compelling web stories and ‘explainer articles’ for consumption by the public, worldwide opinion leaders, government partners, UNICEF country and regional offices, National Committees, and other stakeholders.

    Tasks include writing and editing, working closely with other content creators and subject-matter experts across the organization, and coordinating all aspects of website production. Responsibilities also cover work areas on web analytics, Search Engine Optimization (SEO), and marketing and supporter engagement journeys as they related to the website.

    The post holder will work collaboratively with colleagues in UNICEF’s Division of Communication, Programme and other Divisions, country and regional offices, external partners, and others.

    Key functions/accountabilities:

    Initially, the position will focus on the Digital Transformation Project portfolio. After the first year, it will transition to the other areas of work outlined below.

    Digital Transformation Project / Evergreen content is in the midst of a multi-year digital transformation project, with the ultimate goal of migrating all outstanding content from the old web platform to the new content management system, in order to elevate the content, experience and readership of the UNICEF global website. As a Web Editor responsible for Programme and other key organizational content, the incumbent will:

  • Write, edit, and produce engaging and jargon-free content for
  • Lead the editorial aspect of the web migration and act as a focal point for major thematic modules of the website under the ‘What We Do’ and ‘About Us’ sections.
  • Liaise with experts and focal points in other departments from capturing initial requirements; through a drafting and review process; to publishing on; monitoring performance and making any needed improvements.
  • Ensure web content is aligned with UNICEF’s ‘voice’, messaging and strategic direction, paying attention to sensitive issues and maintaining UNICEF style and factual accuracy.
  • Conceptualize and develop new web pages and sections in line with digital best practices, including on page SEO, and with a focus on the user journey and experience.
  • Ensure accuracy, timeliness and clarity of data.
  • Curate, syndicate, maintain and retire content for evergreen sections, in partnership with relevant sections of the DOC, Programme Division, and other teams across the organization.
  • Work with cross-cutting teams for initiation of new modules, thematic microsites, and other special projects.
  • Input on monitoring and evaluation analytics of web content.
  • Global Priorities and Campaigns

  • Lead web content development and integration for UNICEF global campaigns to support achievement of UNICEF advocacy goals.
  • Partner with DOC, Programme, Country and Regional colleagues to create compelling content, landing pages and microsites for campaigns, partnerships, reports and critical UNICEF initiatives.
  • Coordinate web implementation of marketing strategy for assigned campaigns.
  • Contribute to in-depth analytics reports on the performance of web content for global campaigns and key communication and advocacy moments.
  • Implement lessons learned to optimize web performance for campaigns.
  • Web Story Editing and Production

  • Edit web stories and overall web content to ensure accuracy, clarity and consistency with UNICEF’s goals, strategies, policies and brand. Edit for continuity, logical arrangement, readability, clarity of expression, internal consistency.
  • Write ‘explainer’ articles and original features on UNICEF priorities and other relevant subjects.
  • Manage and curate a constant stream of content from country, regional, and HQ offices.

  • Contribute to the development and application of organization-wide web guidelines, procedures and governance standards.
  • Provide normative guidance to Country and Regional colleagues on best-in-class web practices.

  • Responsible for uploading and producing content, and managing updates, directly in Drupal website content management system (CMS).
  • Log and raise technical issues with CMS and related production technology with the Platforms team.
  • Ensure web content and materials adhere to established web and editorial standards and conforms to UNICEF policy, practices and style.
  • Copy-edit content prior to production and publication to verify grammar, syntax, accuracy, clarity, punctuation, spelling and conformity with established UNICEF style.

  • An advanced university degree (Master’s or higher) in journalism, communication, international relations, political science, development studies or other fields related to this position. A first-level university degree in combination with an additional two years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced degree.
  • A minimum of two years of practical and relevant work experience in writing and/or editing, managing web content, and the production of digital projects.
  • Exceptional digital aptitude.
  • Superb writing and editing skills, including a strong understanding of online storytelling and news, as well as a solid fact-checking and copy-editing background.
  • Ability to transform dense technical and programmatic information into engaging content that is accessible to the general public and a wide array of partners and stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of current best practices in digital communication strategy and engagement and knowledge of best-in-class digital and web platforms.
  • Ability to effectively coordinate all aspects of content development and production across teams.
  • Experience with content management systems is required, experience with Drupal is highly desirable.
  • Experience using Google Analytics.
  • Experience using SEO tools.
  • Detail-oriented, creative, able to work efficiently under tight deadlines.
  • Solid understanding of world affairs, current events, and development issues in particular.
  • Fluency in English is required. A second United Nations language is an asset.
  • Knowledge of United Nations or other international aid or NGOs highly desirable.
  • Developing country work experience and/or familiarity with emergency contexts is considered an asset.
  • Understanding of web UX/UI is a plus.
