Organizational Setting

The main aim of the FAO country offices, which are headed by an FAO Representative, is to assist governments to develop policies, programmes and projects to achieve food security and to reduce hunger and malnutrition, to help develop the agricultural, fisheries and forestry sectors, and to use their environmental and natural resources in a sustainable manner.

Reporting Lines

Under the overall supervision of the FAO Representative; and direct supervision of AFAOR (Programme) and the National Project Coordinator and the technical guidance of the Project Lead/Technical Officer.

Technical Focus

  • Technical guidance on site selection and zonation for farming of new fish species
  • Establish Guidelines for good aquaculture practice for farming of selected new fish species.
  • Training material on farming of selected new fish species for farmers/ stakeholders
  • Feasibility study report on farming of selected new fish species in saline area and contribute in project implementation report (fish farming part)

Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Collect and synthesize up to date information and knowledge on farming systems and practices of major fish species in the region for sharing with the relevant stakeholders in Pakistan;
  • Participate and provide technical inputs to project workshops as needed;
  • Support/ provide technical input, the national team to conduct field survey and investigation for selection of suitable sites for fish farming in the country and develop aquaculture zonation map of Pakistan on the basis of habitats and ecology;
  • Coordinate the work of the corresponding national consultant to conduct review on current aquaculture practices in the country;
  • Prepare a technical and economic feasibility study report on fish farming in inland areas of Pakistan;
  • Identify new fish species and suitable farming system for piloting in the saline area identified by the project based on the feasibility study on farming new fish species in saline area;
  • Provide technical guidance to pilot farm demonstration on culture of selected fish species and farming system, including preparing guidelines of good aquaculture practices for identified fish species;
  • Prepare training materials for the farmers on good aquaculture practices for selected new fish species in saline areas;
  • Support the training workshop for targeted farmers on good aquaculture practices of identified fish species for demonstration supported by the project;
  • Coordinate the work of the national consultant to prepare project implementation report for the evaluation and dissemination workshop of the project;
  • Prepare draft project terminal report;
  • Prepare and submit mission reports and end of assignment report.


Minimum Requirements

  • Advance University degree in fisheries/ aquaculture with specialization in fish farming;
  • Minimum 12 years of relevant experience in aquaculture with site selection, preparation of pond and fish farming;
  • Working knowledge of English, French or Spanish and limited knowledge of one of the other two or Arabic, Chinese, Russian;

  • Past experience of fish farming in saline areas.
  • Excellent report writing skills;
