Background The Wits Reproductive Health and HIV Institute (Wits RHI) is a renowned African-led research institute that seeks solutions to Africa’s health challenges. It is located within the University of the Witwatersrand and addresses some of the greatest public health concerns affecting our region, including HIV and its related problems, sexual and reproductive health and vaccinology. This is done through pioneering, multi-disciplinary research; responsive technical support and innovation in health services; and evidence-based policy development and advocacy with national, regional and global stakeholders. The Wits Reproductive Health and HIV Institute (Wits RHI) is a leading research institute attached to the University of the Witwatersrand. We address some of the greatest public health concerns affecting the region, including HIV, sexual and reproductive health, and vaccinology. We do this through pioneering, multi-disciplinary research; responsive technical support and innovation in health services; and evidence-based policy development and advocacy with national, regional and global stakeholders. Our Key Populations Programme seeks a Technical Advisor to join our senior leadership team. Main purpose of the job To develop the organisation’s internal and external communications strategy to build its reputation for improved sustainability To manage efficient and focused communications including the dissemination of results and activities, while also clearly communicating its mission, and combining its vision, values and activities into cohesive and appropriate messages for a broad range of external audiences This role will also include supporting the implementation of new areas of communication competency relating to the various syndicates communication requirements Location Hilbrow Health Precinct Key performance areas Develop a communication strategy that supports Wits RHI’s objectives and organisational needs Develop communication standards and guidelines Establish communications working group Contribute to strategies to ensure internal alignment of the brand and identity of the Institute Provide Wits RHI staff with regular organisational information through the various communication channels Redesign internal newsletter and oversee bi-monthly production Coordinate the development, design, content and production of appropriate communications Provide support to projects, programmes and departments in producing effective and targeted communication, relating to their activities and results of their work Support internal committees, including leadership groups and organisational health committee, on communication matters Develop and maintain distribution lists so that audiences are segmented as required Co-ordinate the redesign of the intranet from a content perspective and ensure that content is updated regularly Obtain input from internal stakeholders to ensure information for the intranet is relevant, accurate and up-to-date Update corporate identity and branding and ensure consistent application across all communication mediums – templates, forms, signage, stationery Develop and implement branding guidelines Ensure all communication is compliant with donor requirements and Wits RHI branding Ensure strong Wits RHI brand presence at events/conferences Ensure regular communication with external stakeholders, including donors, government, community, and academic partners Respond to ad hoc donor requests relating to general information about Wits RHI Redesign and enhance the Wits RHI website to ensure a professional, user-friendly site that is a resource for stakeholders Contribute to the planning and implementation of hosting external review visits including strategic advisory boards, University Review boards etc. Co-ordinate the production of strategic organisational communications for external use, including Annual Reviews, and reports to external bodies such as WHO, UNAIDS and FHS Co-ordinate the development of a photo library of all projects/programmes and of senior management Work with the senior communications team to develop a strategy to optimise the partnership with the University Develop communications systems and channels for regular contact with a variety of external audiences Develop guidelines and tools to assist institute staff to communicate through a range of channels with external audiences Work with the Communications Department to develop guidelines and tools to assist Institute staff in hosting visitors and partners, ranging from standard materials to protocol guidance Oversee the planning and arrangement of events and coordination of visitors Support the professional and smooth organisation of Wits RHI events and visits from a communications perspective Ensure the visitor’s log is maintained Develop and implement a proactive media strategy where possible Build relationships with the media by responding timeously to media queries Obtain input from internal stakeholders to ensure information is relevant, accurate and up-to-date Oversee the monitoring of media coverage and set up systems to keep records thereof Develop social media strategy Build and maintain the organisation’s social media presence Obtain input from internal stakeholders to ensure information is relevant, accurate and up-to-date Oversee the monitoring of social media coverage and set up systems to track coverage Attend to all staffing requirements and administration Supervise and manage the duties of subordinates to ensure optimal staff utilisation and maintenance of sound labour relations Perform and facilitate performance development and assessments Identify substandard performance by team members and take necessary corrective action Coach and train subordinates and team members to ensure the acquisition of knowledge and skills required by the organisation Promote harmony, teamwork and sharing of information Required minimum education and training Post graduate degree in Communications or related field Required minimum work experience 5-7 years’ experience in managing communications Experience managing a communications team Desirable additional education, work experience and personal abilities Experience in a donor or academic environment will be advantageous Strong Leadership Pro-active, able to exercise discretion and independent decision-making Sound interpersonal and negotiation skills Exceptional planning and organising skills Excellent communication, report writing and presentation skills Advanced writing skills Certification in Journalism NGO (donor funded) experience within the HIV/Aids and research discipline Commitment to meeting deadlines and delivering on tasks Able to work effectively under tight deadlines Creative and
