The Division of Communication (DOC) aims to win support for the cause of children from decision-makers and the wider public, and is working to become an even stronger advocacy, campaigning and communications force for children. The Media Section in DOC leads on media strategies, collaborating across UNICEF and media organizations to secure children’s rights.

How can you make a difference?

As part of the media team, the staff member is responsible for assisting and supporting the section in developing, managing, coordinating, implementing and monitoring media strategies and releasing information on a regular basis to media organizations worldwide about issues of concern to the organization.

Key functions/accountabilities:

Support the development, implementation and monitoring of media strategies on priority issues for children and UNICEF.

  • Assist in the rapid and accurate dissemination of materials to the media, National Committees, partners and other appropriate audiences.
  • Help develop and pitch story ideas and place UNICEF materials in mainstream, online and digitally native outlets.
  • Draft and edit media materials, including press releases, Q&As, key messages and other major corporate communications materials for internal and external audiences.
  • Help plan and organize press conferences, events and interviews with UNICEF experts.
  • Assist in the planning and execution of media campaigns that generate coverage for UNICEF.
  • Develop, maintain and update media contact list/database.
  • Monitor public perception of UNICEF issues.
  • Provide relevant inputs to DOC Annual Report, work plans and other documentation.
  • Perform other communication duties as assigned by the supervisor.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

  • A university degree in communication, journalism, public relations or a related discipline.
  • At least two (2) years of practical professional work experience in communication and media relations.
  • Field experience and knowledge of United Nations or other international organizations is considered an asset.
  • Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language, preferably French and/or Spanish, is considered an asset.
